How Motion Detection Works
Motion Detection allows a camera to react to movement rather than record everything non-stop. When activity is detected, the device can start recording or send a notification.
How Does a Camera Detect Motion?
There are several main technologies.
Image Analysis
The camera compares consecutive frames and identifies changes in the image. This method allows for sensitivity and detection zone adjustments, but shadows, changes in lighting, or moving trees can cause false alarms.
PIR Sensor
A PIR sensor detects changes in infrared radiation. When a person or another warm object moves within the sensor's range, the camera registers a temperature change. This technology is particularly popular in autonomous cameras due to its low power consumption.
AI Recognition
More advanced systems can analyze images and determine what exactly caused the motion — for example, a person or an animal. This helps reduce the number of unnecessary notifications.
How to Reduce False Alarms?
Install the camera correctly and adjust the sensitivity. If possible, exclude trees, roads, and other constantly moving objects from the detection zone.
It's also important to consider the direction of movement: PIR sensors typically react better to movement across the zone than directly towards the camera.
What to Choose?
For a simple system, standard motion detection is suitable. For an autonomous camera, PIR is best, and if event filtering is important, choose AI recognition.
When selecting a camera, pay attention not only to resolution but also to the type of motion detection, sensitivity, viewing angle, night vision, and battery life.
