A modern car is a complex electronic system with GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, sensors, multimedia, and an OBD diagnostic port. Most of these devices are standard, but sometimes additional electronic devices may be present in the car: GPS trackers, miniature cameras, microphones, or transmitters.
If you bought a used car, used a rental car, or simply want to check your car for foreign equipment, you can perform a basic check yourself.
1. Start with a visual inspection
Carefully inspect the interior and trunk. Pay special attention to places where a small device can be inconspicuously placed: under the seats, near the dashboard, in the glove compartment, center console, and near the fuse box.
Outside, check the space under the bumpers, wheel arches, undercarriage, and other accessible areas. Look for unfamiliar wires, magnetic casings, small boxes, or parts that look non-standard.
2. Check the OBD port
The OBD diagnostic port is often located under the dashboard. Diagnostic scanners and other devices connect to it. If you find an unknown adapter, first determine its purpose. Some OBD devices use Bluetooth or other wireless connections to transmit data.
3. Use an RF signal detector
Not all devices are easy to spot visually. A GPS tracker or other transmitting device may periodically send data via radio channel.
An RF detector helps detect active radio signals in the car. For a more accurate check, turn off standard wireless devices, if possible, and consistently check the interior, trunk, and exterior parts of the car.
It is important to consider that the car itself creates many radio signals. Therefore, detecting a signal does not necessarily mean the presence of a hidden device – it is necessary to determine its source.
4. Check for unknown Bluetooth and Wi-Fi devices
Open the list of available Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections on your smartphone or the car's multimedia system. An unfamiliar device deserves attention, especially if you did not install it yourself.
5. If you find a suspicious device
Do not rush to disconnect or disassemble it. First, take a photo of the device and its installation location. Then try to identify the manufacturer and purpose. If the device is connected to the car's electrical system, it is safer to contact a specialist.
Regular car checks take a little time but help you better control your personal space and understand what electronic devices are inside your car.
